Össur Bioskin® Supports
Bioskin® are manufacturers of premium bracing and performance apparel offering orthopaedic solutions and compression supports globally. They pride themselves on their unique designs and bespoke materials, offering a thinner, breathable and more compressive option to neoprene based products.
A sports brace is designed to manage a specific pathology or used as a preventative measure for sensitive areas of the body. The objective of any sports brace is to offer additional protection and stabilisation to an affected area which can keep a person mobile longer. The use of compression in injury management can help to reduce pain and inflammation, which also works towards allowing an individual to continue being active.
Bioskin offer a range of sports braces for key areas across the body including ankle supports, knee supports and wrist supports. They also offer four different materials across some of their braces, each with its own set of benefits. The highest level of compression is offered by the Ultima material and remains the original material used in performance skins. For a soft compression approach offering a super soft micro-fleece lining then the 2s is an option. The Ultima 2s is also very lightweight and thin to allow it to breathe easily. The 2Sl offers a hook and look closure system with the same micro-fleece lining as seen in the 2s for additional comfort.
Foot and ankle support
No two ankle injuries are the same, as different people are affected differently and each can require varying lengths of recovery. The brace you choose will be dictated by the type of injury you wish to manage.
If you are concerned about rolling over your ankle the Trilok™ can be used to control the eversion and inversion of your rear foot. Whilst working to control motion it ensures that the plantar or dorsi-flexion rages are not limited so that you can keep moving as naturally as possible.
Where an injury results in a minor instability with inflammation then a brace such as the Standard Ankle Skin ankle support could be beneficial. It works to offer compression on the key affected area, which can allow the wearer to stay active longer through reduced pain and increased mobility.
There are many causes of wrist injuries, from sports injuries to those incurred through overuse such as tendinitis. From a sporting perspective injuries can be as a result of a fall or through racket sports where a greater amount of pressure is applied to the joint.
The Boomerang is ideal for use with minor wrist complaints such as strains and tendinitis. Whilst these injuries as typically self-limiting, the use of a brace can offer additional protection and compression in order to enhance mobility and increase confidence.
For more serious wrist injuries the DP2 and DP3 offer full wrist immobilisation. The compression, in conjunction with the immobilisation can help to manage pain and protect the wrist from further injury during rehabilitation. The key difference between the DP2 and DP3 is that the latter is slightly longer, both however can used to manage soft tissue injuries, arthritis and sprains.
Arm and elbow support
The elbow is one of the most important joints in the upper body, with any pain and reduced mobility having an impact on day to day life. Elbow injuries are not necessarily sporting related but typically are as a result of overuse, either through playing a musical instrument, painting, playing racket sports or playing golf.
One of the more common products to manage elbow injuries is that of the tennis elbow band, providing therapeutic compression to the affected side of the elbow. Whilst it is largely a self-limiting condition the use of a brace can help during rehabilitation, with full recover being anything up to 12 months.
Whilst the tennis elbow band specifically manages lateral epicondylitis and the associated inflammation, a standard elbow skin can help manage general injuries such as bruising or swelling. Whilst these may also occur as a result of sporting activities their recovery time is a lot quicker.
Which support should I buy?
As there are numerous options on the market it is essential to obtain a professional diagnosis in the first instance so that you are able to select the brace which will offer the greatest set of benefits for the condition you wish to manage.
