The Unloader One® Knee Brace

The Unloader One is a knee brace which is clinically proven to aid the mobility of patients suffering from unicompartmental osteoarthritis of the knee.

What is osteoarthritis of the knee?

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a degenerative condition resulting in the gradual loss of cartilage within the knee joint. The loss of cartilage results in bone on bone contact which can be very painful and debilitating, with activities such as walking, running and cycling becoming increasingly difficult. Whilst all weight bearing activities can result in pain, patients can still undertake non weight bearing exercises such as swimming.

Mobility can be reduced amongst sufferers of osteoarthritis of the knee due to the amount of pain they encounter, whether during an activity or even through resting. Patients can also report inflammation of the knee joint which can further limit movement.

Treatment options

Unfortunately there is no cure for osteoarthritis of the knee, but there are both surgical and non-surgical options available to patients.

Surgical solutions include whether a partial or full knee replacement which are designed to last for around 15 years. Whilst a knee replacement will remove the condition it is not to be taken lightly as it can take up to six months post surgery before a patient is able to walk unaided following extensive physiotherapy.

In considering non-surgical solutions painkillers can be prescribed to patients to help manage inflammation and any pain experienced, which can allow for improved mobility. The main issue with the use of prescription medication is that it fails to address the root cause of the issue, which is the breakdown of cartilage and merely masks the pain to allow a patient to remain mobile. Ultimately the osteoarthritis of the knee will continue and further treatment will be required in the long run.

Another non-surgical solution which is becoming increasingly popular is the use of a knee brace such as the Unloader One, a knee brace designed to specifically manage the symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee.

The importance of increasing mobility

light and moderate exercise is greatly beneficial for a patient, releasing endorphins, or natural painkillers into the system which can help to keep them active for longer.

By experiencing a reduced amount of pain a patient can experience a better quality of life through enhanced activity levels. A patient can keep fit either through walking, running or cycling and perform simple tasks like walking to the shops without the fear of their condition getting in the way.

It is important to increase the mobility of those suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee, whether to allow them to move freely around their home or travel to the shops or even performing light exercise such as cycling or running. Endorphins released by the body during exercise act as natural painkillers which can help manage the symptoms of osteoarthritis of knee in conjunction with the Unloader One, improving their quality of life.

How does the Unloader One work?

The Unloader One works by offloading the pressure from the affected side of the knee to reduce bone on bone contact. By reducing the bone on bone contact it can help to reduce the degenerative nature of the condition, even delaying the need for surgery. With a reduced amount of pain the mobility of the patient can also be improved.

It is worth noting however that braces such as the Unloader One can only be used where only one side of the joint is affected by osteoarthritis of the knee.
