The Core

The energy for Pilates is said to emanate from the core and spread outwards to the limbs. Practitioners think it essential to build a strong core to ensure increasing stability and the best possible potential to progress to ever more advanced Pilates.

Health Benefits

Benefits reported include better posture and increased muscle tone and mobility in the joints. It is also an effective tension and stress reliever. There is also evidence that practising Pilates can provide significant pain relief for those suffering from conditions such as non-specific pain in the lower back.

Breathing

Pilates breathing should be done with control, concentration and precision. Joseph Pilates thought that efficiently circulating blood was able to awaken the body cells. For this to happen properly, he said that the blood needed to be well supplied with oxygen so that waste products caused by fatigue could be removed from the body. He believed that key to this was proper breathing — particularly forced exhalation.

What is Pilates

We only take very small classes of up to 7 people, this means everyone gets the attention necessary to ensure exercises are carried out in the most effective and correct manner.  Pilates is a targeted exercise system that works to strengthen the entire body, thus improving muscle-strength, balance, posture and flexibility. It incorporates various elements of martial arts, yoga and western exercise and was invented in the early 20th century by a German man, Joseph Pilates.

Pilates places significant emphasis on breathing whilst focusing the exercises on targeted and precise moments designed to benefit the specific part of the body requiring treatment. The quality of movement is extremely important and is regarded as more important than the number of repetitions.

By concentrating on controlled, smooth movements, the practitioner is able to become highly in tune with their own body. Our classes have clients from Disley, New Mills and High Peak are perfectly structured to make sure you get the very best from your pilates workouts, and what's more they're all run by qualified instructors which means we really understand your body and its limits.

Mat Based

Joseph Pilates designed special types of apparatus for his exercises to be executed on. Later, he developed a series of exercises designed to be performed on a mat, making it easier for Pilates to be practised at home. These days, Pilates is more often a mat-based activity, occasionally utilising equipment such as gym balls or stretch bands to enhance the exercises.
