Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is frequently associated with repetitive overhead activities.

This could be related to sporting activities such as swimming, tennis or weightlifting, but could also be caused by everyday activities such as hanging washing, decorating or gardening.

Are you Suffering?

If you are experiencing shoulder pain then ask yourself these 3 questions:

  • Is your arm stiff and difficult to move through its full range of motion?
  • Does your shoulder feel like it may slip out of joint?
  • Is there a notable difference in the strength in the affected shoulder compared to the other side.

If you answered “yes” to any one of these questions, you should consult one of our physiotherapists for help in determining the severity of the problem.

The most common injuries often involve the soft tissue around the shoulder joint or the rotator cuff.  The ball and socket joint is rarely an issue.

Impingement

Impingement occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff rub against the top of the shoulder joint (the acromion).

This often results in a referred pattern of pain on the outside of the shoulder referred to as the Regimental badge area.

Impingement issues should be dealt with as soon as they arise, as ignoring it can lead to further more serious damage.

Instability

If the muscles around the shoulder become weak or damaged then the joint can become unstable, you will notice pain on lifting the arm and maybe a feeling of the shoulder coming out of joint.

Physiotherapy can help strengthen the rotator cuff and restore the feeling of the shoulder being in the right place.

Rotator Cuff Injuries

The rotator cuff allows the shoulder to be as mobile as it is.  Without the support of the rotator cuff muscles the shoulder socket would have to be much deeper to prevent it dislocating.

Damage to the cuff results in the shoulder not functioning properly and can lead to pain and instability.
